Bastards care nothing for Global Warming!

So, some Somali pirates captured an American captain who allowed his crew to get away after offering himself as a hostage. In a daring rescue authorized by President Obama and executed by Navy Seals they rushed in, kicked ass, killing three pirates.

Now, I know that pirates attacking people is bad and pirates pointing guns at people are very very naughty. But, there are other issues to consider. Examine this trend for a bit and note the clear correlation:

Perhaps Obama isn't serious about global warming. That or there arrr some problems with this logic.

Wind blew down my internet for a day.

I nearly went insane.

I think there is some issue with internet addiction, if being unconnected causes such utter turmoil. For example, a good solid 40% of my thoughts ended with "but I can't do that because I don't have internet." -- I don't think this is healthy. I pride myself on being ready if I ever fall into some kind of timewarp and being ready for transport into the past. I even kind-of-sort-of want a smallpox vaccine just so that I'd be safe from the disease without needing to find a dairy maid with cow pox. However, if transported into the past, I'd go crazy without internet then I certainly don't want to fall into a scientifically impossible reordering of the universe.

I am unprepared for this course of (impossible) events.

I probably couldn't even manage to live through 1998 internet. What good are secret keywords (they've been the same for a decade or so now/no I'll never tell you them), that only I know so that I can identify time-travelers from the future, (including myself) if timetraveling leads to saninternetsanity?

Sure, I never bother to prepare for depression era financial collapse or post-peak breakdown of a world unable to dig energy out of the ground, or even a global warming run away world where climate change kicks off a chain reaction of accelerated heating and leads to a post apocalyptic world of subterranean existence as actual and real possibilities... but time travel? I thought I was prepared for and it seems that I would be utterly time-shocked.

There's a few signs that global warming wins.

One of them just happened. Methane is trapped in different places, when it gets released it will trigger more heating and more release. It's started. How fun.

Rofl: propaganda

Ah, the good old days. I'm astounded that lying works. All you need to do is get a large group of well funded people to lie a lot and have those lies broadcast and you're instantly a winner. Seriously the truth never stands a chance.

Ambitious?

Wired's zine has an article which is titled "Ambitious California Emissions Plan Could Boost Economy, Chart National Policy."

Sounds promising?

The state presented its plan Thursday morning to cut greenhouse-gas emissions by about 30 percent by 2020.

Oh, dear.

I know there's just no pleasing me. Unless you're going to enact a plan to cut greenhouse-gas emissions by 100% by 1998, you're not doing enough to prevent a series of unmitigated disasters. 30% by 2020? Is that a fricking joke? Seriously we need to go Carbon Negative about now to spare ourselves any real massive pain.

*sigh*

We might be a bit more screwed than you think

Droughts - from Spain to the south-east US to northern Africa are suffering drought. Mostly because last year was the hottest year on record and the year before that was the hottest year on record. This year is shaping up to be the hottest year on record and on a global scale that means global problems as the crops fail and lead food shortages.

Food riots - It turns out that people like to eat food and when they can't eat food they break stuff. Why don't they just sit there and die like good little people. Just because you ate last week doesn't mean you get food this week. Sure, you barely made enough to buy a bowl of rice and since the price of rice has tripled you can afford three times as much rice (I took a lot of math in college).

Aid workers are worried... at least they are when they aren't sexually abusing children.

"They offered us 100 Haitian gourdes ($2.80) and some chocolate if we would suck them. I said, 'No,' but some of the girls did it and got the money."

It doesn't help at all that the US is turning our food (we eat corn, everything is corn) into ethanol to augment our gasoline in what might be a break even process to fuel our cars. This is useful in several ways.
1) It doesn't work. It takes as much energy as we get out to get it in.
2) It exacerbates the food shortages and price spikes by limiting the supply of food.
3) It takes a massive amount of water, which as we see above, we don't have very much of.

In the US we pump a lot of ground water from underground lakes. We use about a gallon of water to make a teaspoon of ethanol.

Which brings us back to price of gasoline which is closely tied to the price of oil. We are running out of light crude. So we need to use the dirtier sources. For now that means pumping the gunk out of the bottom of rigs we stopped using and exploiting the tar sands. Soon it will mean getting massive amounts of oil from the oil shale. Ironically at $150 a barrel we actually are set to become energy independent. The US has so much oil shale that we could effectively gas up our Hummers for decades. The gas is going to cost $15 a gallon, but it'll be American gas! We should, as a result of our policies allow farmers to sell their products at a premium (the reason there are so many advocates for ethanol) and become energy independence. Be careful what you wish for.

Oil Use->Global Warming
Coal Use->Global Warming
Global Warming->Drought
Drought->Water Use
Drought->Crop Failure
Crop Failure->Food Shortage
Food Shortage->Food Riots
Oil Use->Peak Oil
Peak Oil->Oil Prices
Oil Prices->Food Prices
Food Prices->Food Shortage
Food Shortage->Sexual Abuse
Ethanol->Food Prices
Ethanol->Drought

From hummers to hummers, we're a little bit fucked.

Science in Fifteen Words

Global Warming: We are polluting the atmosphere with heat trapping gases according to statistics and basic science.

Evolution: Sometimes screw-ups help. Evolution preserves anything that helps an organism compete with its species brethren.

Big Bang: Galaxies are flinging apart have been for 12 billion years, multiple independent lines of evidence.

Ghosts: If there is no reason to suppose something exists then it isn't supposed to exist.

Souls: If there is no reason to suppose something exists then it isn't supposed to exist.

Gods: If there is no reason to suppose something exists then it isn't supposed to exist.

Aliens: 100,000,000,000,000,000,000 is a big number. Space is too big to come here to molest cows.

Skeptical Inquirer Conclusion on Global Warming

I know, it seems pretty random but it's such a great ending to a good piece they had a bit back that I feel I need to reference point. Also, I've been slacking on my blogging.

No scientist to date has made a strong case (i.e., one supported by a large number of his colleagues who publish in the refereed journals) for any observation(s) or mechanism(s) that can explain the current rapid global-warming trend by invoking natural causes. Arguments for solar forcing, for forcing by internal modes of the climate system (natural processes that operate within the Earth system itself), and for the urban heat-island effect, have either failed to offer hard evidence or have been completely discredited. Nor do Earth's long-duration, quasi-periodic, dynamical motions explain the current rapid temperature rise.
In contrast, global warming forced by a growing atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide, is based on sound science that refers to a mechanism that is well understood and universally accepted by the scientific community. Models that incorporate this and many other known processes support this conclusion, and the models themselves, while still in need of improvement, are becoming increasingly reliable for making global predictions.
The probability is extremely high that human-generated greenhouse gases, with carbon dioxide as the major offender are the primary cause of well-documented global warming and climate change today.

Ignorance in, ignorance out. Old comments make great fodder.

So one of my old posts got a comment a couple days back on the issue of climate change.

And on top of that the hipocrit has a global warming sticker on a Ford F-350. It's ok thought we all know Global warming is a load of shit. What ever happened to all the talk about the hole in the ozone in south America? Oh yeah that's right the Democrats couldn't find any way to make money from it!!!

We're polluting the atmosphere with heat-trapping gases... it's getting hotter; the computer models are not optimistic.

The ozone hole was around the poles and has just started to shrink after a major global effort to completely phase out CFCs 20 years ago.

Ah, news... I hardly knew yea...

I watched a bit of CNN and learned two lessons. Apparently the heat waves in the south, floods in the north and category 5 hurricane hitting Mexico are just day to day things, with no relation to global warming. Though, all of them are pretty obviously from an increase in heat. But, that's just because they were reporting and nowadays if you had to give global warming credit for all the batshit crazy weather we have it would pretty well cut into the weather report time which seems to be more and more.

Secondly, Communist China is selling us lead painted toys that we buy from Communist China. It used to be that we were fine importing so many goods from Communist China but now it seems Communist China has fallen out of our good graces. A bit of this lead toys story was simply because groups did the testing of the stuff they imported from Communist China to make sure their Communist China goods were safe... oh and did I note that each and every time CNN talked about Communist China they made damn sure to say "Communist". -- I don't even know what that means!

It is cold in some places... ergo global warming is a lie!

This is one of the oddest arguments I've seen. And it honestly strikes at the heart of the problem. It's simply exposes the ignorance of the issue itself. It snowed in my area of California for the first time in more than like 20 years last winter. I mean, several inches of snow in Southern California (not in mountains). This is a rather stunning departure from the standard climate. Hm.

1958 video on Global Warming. It's pretty good, the calculations are off by a lot. It would sink most of Florida, but a lot of that flood isn't going to happen.

California during the hottest summer on record.

You got to love global warming. The rest of the week is set to be 100f+ (hot). And that's only because they can do weather predictions for only the rest of the week.

Well, at least it will sweat the disbelief out of some people easily fooled by transparent PR campaigns against science.
