If God is Dead, Who Gets His House.

New York Magazine has a pretty good article on atheism and atheist churches, a pretty good read.

Update: Classic comment.

ADUDE:
Theology teaches us that the purest "proof" of God exists in our relationships to one another, specifically in the form of communities, and, ideally, the world-community as a whole. The idea that atheists are somehow "independent" is of course silly. We, the species, depend upon one another in every single aspect of our lives. It's what makes us different from the animals. If, as seems to be the case, we are animals who build churches and worship a common good - call it what you will - why so much resistance to the idea that love is the universal standard, and that the greatest, universal love is God? Call me crazy (and they will) but it seems to me the atheists want to have their cake and eat it too - they want all the good stuff of religion - morality, meaningfulness, etc - without having to name or examine the standard by which they determine anything to be "good." But, as a theist, I'm obviously stupider than they, and so will keep my sheep-like mouth shut.

ORDAINED ATHEIST:
So silly. Atheism is not a philosophy or a paradigm or a worldview: it is the absence of belief. Good luck with forming a "movement" out of that.

ADUDE: Your examples of the "good stuff of religion": morality, meaningfulness, etc make me laugh. Religidiots take their cues from God Allsmitey, whether they're burning witches, rousting out Jews, or flying airplanes into buildings. Some morality!

Also your promise to keep your ovine mouth shut -- AFTER you've blathered your hooey -- suggests a Christian-level of stoopidity.

Religidiots take their cues from God Allsmitey! That line alone made it all worth my time, so stolen!

I'll Huff and Puff...

So funny thing. San Bernardino is well lets just call it windy mc fireseverywhere. Well, it turns out the church two doors down blew down. It was mostly just a tarp and such but it is totally thrashed. Praise Wotan!

Not that I just randomly hate churches for propagating really pathetic lies. Rather they play loud music on Saturday... and it kind of bugs.

Those infidels praise some first century wish-granting zombie who they somehow think that telepathic communication with is feasible and though the complete lack of acknowledgment packets (as any proper communication system should use) they also think it's praise worthy... but somehow they also do this on Saturn's day, tempting fate if you ask me.

Followup Church Shooting.

Last week I made a few predictions about a very recent church shooting, upon admittedly no data. How well did I do?

I suspect this fellow was still a theist.

Well, he reportedly shouted "Liars! Liars!" and shot the pastor. Okay, actually he was apparently referring to some secondary altercation that lead to the police investigating him for child molestation of a 14-year old girl. There's nothing to suggest even remotely that he lost his faith.

I would take bets to that effect.

I think I would have won.

Sadly, I'd even go far as assume religion played a roll.

Still no evidence here. Seemed to be a family matter in a small community where he had issues with the family of another church family. That doesn't sound like actual religious cause to me. The Police aren't helping to provide evidence for my speculation.

Also at some point he reported grabbed somebody, asked if anybody else would like to be killed in his stead, and then as nobody stepped forward shot the man. Somehow this seems pretty much an obvious result, perhaps he should have offered a leg shot vs. a headshot or something people could have said 'yes' to.

Church shooting...

This is what happens when you leave Under God in the pledge!

I suspect this fellow was still a theist. When he shot several people in church. I would take bets to that effect. Sadly, I'd even go far as assume religion played a roll. And that's a lot of conclusions to jump to when I have no information on the issue.

Fun fact of the day: Burnt witch.

You know why the Church burns witches? The given passage says "suffer a witch to live", but why burn them? Oddly, the Church literally read their doctrines and "the church abhors bloodshed" -- this is why they killed people with fire. That way their blood stays inside their body as the die. Apparently nooses are less effective than loopholes.
